The Andaman Plantations in the Andaman and Nicobar islands has been in action since 1955. More than 1200 acres of cultivable lands of the islands are controlled by the Andaman Plantation Development Corporation or APDC. We adopt the following methods in order to sustain the quality of our products and in turn maintain the integrity of our plantations –
• Multi storied cropping Management.
• Nutrient management through organic recycling.
• Weed Management.
• Need based Insect and Pest Management.
Coconut, Arecanut, Noni, Black Pepper, Cloves and Cardamom are the primary constituents that are cultivated in the Andaman Plantations. Minnebay, Mithakhari, Bambooflat, Chunnabhatta and North Bay are the five Andaman Plantations in the islands which are accessible both by road and sea due to its close proximity with the capital city of Port Blair.
Among all the products being cultivated in the Andaman Plantations, Noni or the Andaman Noni is considered to be the most important and the most sought after fruit not only in the Indian sub-continent, but throughout the world.
Andaman noni is considered to be a vital medicinal plant found in islands of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Andaman noni is a very useful medicinal plant. It is also better known as the ‘queen of medicinal plants’. Noni is basically found as an evergreen shrub in the islands. Noni fruits and their products help in fighting many major diseases in the human body. Noni fruits are at their best when plucked off ripe from the plantations. Tumor inhibition, anti-inflammatory activity, immunity enhancement and cleansing are the important biological activities that the noni fruits help in developing in the human body. A noni fruit was also known as the ‘starvation fruit earlier. Many people in the islands believed and still believe that the fruit acts as a savior during the difficult times of famine. Noni fruits were a part of the regular food of the people of the islands in the earlier days Studies are on for elaborating its effectiveness in the anti-cancer research.
Another important product from the Andaman Plantations is of the Noni Capsules. A sub product of the Noni fruit, a noni capsule is made up of 400 mg of noni dried powder (Morinda Citrifolia) and 100 mg of Noni alkaloid extract. To make a noni capsule, a noni fruit is dehydrated, irradiated and ground up to be packed into capsules, usually made of plant-derived cellulose. The noni dried powder is obtained by powdering the noni dried fruits and they emulate the same characteristics as a raw noni fruit does. On the other hand the noni extract is prepared by extracting the active ingredient from the noni fruits in a concentrated form. This particular extract is also very useful in preparing herbal products. The noni extract is used to manufacture other noni products also. Proper digestion support, boosting the immune system, delivering superior anti-oxidants in the human body, nutrient absorption and increasing energy are the primary biological activities that a noni capsule helps in.
