Andaman Plantations Spread over a distance of about 800 kms in the Bay of Bengal and covered with lush green forests all over, Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a group of 527 islands, islets and rocks. A Union Territory of India, the islands are located in the Bay of Bengal at a longitude of 92 - 94 degrees East and at a latitude of 6-14 degrees North. Only 38 of the 527 islands here are inhabited with human population. The two islands, Andaman and Nicobar, are separated by a distance of 300 kms. Situated near the Arakanmayo mountain range of Burma, Mother Nature has endowed all it's features over the islands which make it a centre of attraction for andaman tourism. The scenic beauty of the islands equates it with the 'Paradise on Earth'. 92% of the islands are covered with lush green forests. While Andaman consists of cultured and literate people, Nicobar is still inhabited by primitive tribes. The people here speak Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Nicobarese and also English. The peace loving people of the islands have turned it to a tourist hotspot. andaman tourism has been on it's high from the last few decades. Situated in the Hot or Torrid Zone, the capital city of the islands, Port Blair experiences a minimum temperature of 24 degree Celsius and a maximum of 30 degree Celsius. The mean relative humidity is around 80%. The rainy season in the islands usually starts from the month of May and continues till November . The island is visited by South-West and North-East monsoon. A rainfall of about 3200-3250 mm annually is the average monsoon flavour that the island experiences. There are three kinds of soil found on the islands - Entisols, Inceptisols and Alfisols. The primary agricultural soils are found in the valleys of the region. The soil in the valley are of alluvial and colluvial origin. The climatic and soil conditions of Andaman and Nicobar Islands are highly conducive for the growth and development amongst other things of Coconut, Arecanut, Noni, Vanilla , Black Pepper, Clove, Cardamom , Coco, Pineapple, Dragon fruits, Pineapple, Papaya, Banana , Gambier, Orchids and other Intercrops. So, apart from andaman tourism, agriculture too holds a bright future for the economy of the islands.
