Sunday, January 30, 2011

527 islands surrounded by a blue aquatic cover – that is how one can define the Andaman and Nicobar islands briefly. The islands were in mystery for a long time due to their inaccessibility with the mainland in India. Covered with lush green forests all over and surrounded by waters all around Andaman and Nicobar Islands stand to be the perfect tourist destination. A plethora of birds and flowers species makes the island highly romantic and poetic in nature. A meandering coastline accompanied by palm trees makes it a picturesque destination for nature lovers.

Out of the 527 islands here, only 38 of them are inhabited by the human civilization. These islands are often called as ‘India’s best kept secret’. 92% of the islands are covered with forests and 86% area of the territory consists of the reserved and protected forests of the Andaman and Nicobar islands. The heart of andaman tourism lies in the Tribal Reserves, National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries. It comprises 50% of the forest area. Rich luxuriant mangroves cover nearly 5% of the forest cover in the islands. More than 150 species of plant and animal species are found here. The islands are also known as a Bird’s paradise. Around 271 species of birds reside in the islands. Megapode, Swiftlet, Hornbill and Nicobar Pigeon are some of the most popular species of birds that are found here.

  • Andaman tourism’s first important destination in the island is Chatham Saw Mill. Built in the British era, the mill harbors 1000 workers. Woods like Patak, Marble, Curzon and Satin are processed here.
  • Next is Hadoo museum which is a Wood museum. There is also a Naval Marine Museum in Hadoo. Navy's costumes, equipments and weapons are displayed vividly here. Also few documentaries on the island are also found in the museum.
  • Hadoo also has a zoo which harbors a variety of birds, crocodiles, monkeys, foxes, pythons, deer, wild goats, pigs, parrots and pigeons.
  • The Anthropological Museum in Phoenix Bay displays the weapons, pottery, hut models, wooden boats, and some photographs of the native tribes of the island.
  • The Cellular Jail in Atlanta point is the most popular tourist spot in the island. It reminds the visitors about the brutality inflicted upon the Indian freedom fighters.
  • The Fishers Museum in Aberdeen Jetty is a fishing extravaganza. A variety of fishes can be seen here.
  • The Corbyn's Cove Beach near the capital city of Port Blair is a beautiful beach in the island. A pristine coastline is surrounded by a series of coconut trees. Rowing boats, Pedal boats, Kayaks aqua cycle, Aqua glides and Bumper are available to enjoy.
  • The Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park situated 29 kms away from Port Blair is another beautiful locale in the Island. Coral reefs, deep sea animals and mangrove forests are regular sights here.

Apart from Andaman tourism there are other reasons also which interests people from the other countries in the islands. A medicinal plant called Noni is the reason why people from other nations are flooding into the island these days. With some magical medicinal properties, this particular plant and its fruit has become the centre of attraction for the medical hemisphere not only in the Indian subcontinent, but also in the rest of the world. The andaman noni or Morinda Citrifolia, commonly known as great Morinda, Indian mulberry, beach mulberry, Tahitian Noni, cheese fruit is a tree in the family Rubiaceae. Xeronine, a vital alkaloid present in the fruit helps in repairing cells and delivering superior anti-oxidants in the human body. A number of products are manufactured from the parent fruit in the islands. One of them is the Noni Capsule. Noni Capsules are Vegetable and Gelatine capsules filled with noni dry powder or noni extract. A noni dry powder is a combination of 400 mg of noni dried powder (Morinda Citrifolia) and 100 mg of Noni alkaloid extract. A Noni Capsule helps in boosting the immune system, increasing energy; proper digestion support and nutrient absorption are a few other benefits one can derive on consuming a noni capsule.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, one of the six union territories that India has is situated in the Bay of Bengal. Out of 527 islands here, only 38 of them are inhabited by the human population. The two major islands, Andaman and Nicobar are separated by a distance of 300 kms. 92% of the islands are covered with lush green forests. With Arakanmayo mountain range taking the islands in its porch, the islands are a picturesque description of the beauty of the Mother Nature. Agriculture in the islands has undergone a marked change in the last few years. With typically tropical climate residing in the islands, the capital city of the islands Port Blair experiences a minimum temperature of 24 degree Celsius and a maximum temperature of 30 degree Celsius every year. Humidity does not cross the 80% mark in the islands over the whole year. The islands experience rainfall from the month of May. It is visited by South-west and North-east monsoon. It continues till the month of November with an average rainfall of 3200 – 3250 mm annually. There are three kinds of soil found on the islands -   Entisols, Inceptisols and Alfisols. The primary agricultural soils are found in the valleys of the region. The soil in the valley are of alluvial and colluvial origin. All these conditions make the Andaman and Nicobar Islands suitable for agricultural practices to a great extent. This is the reason why our Andaman plantations have been able to prosper in the islands since its inception in 1955. Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Port Blair are the major areas of all plantation activities carried out for andaman Plantations. We are the largest private planters on the island cultivating Coconut, Arecanut, Noni, Black Pepper, Cloves and Cardamom. Minnebay, Mithakhari, Bambooflat, Chunnabhatta and North Bay are the five Andaman Plantations spread over a plantation area which is more than 1200 acres in the island. All these plantations are accessible both by road and sea routes and are in close proximity to the island’s airport and its capital city of Port Blair. We have forayed into value added and end products and have established ourselves in a diverse group of crop portfolio to cater to diverse end user segments. We process our Coconut into Copra and Noni into Noni dried powder and Noni extract which we use for making Noni juice and Noni capsules. With our registered office in Kolkata, and regular ship and flight connectivity to both Chennai and Kolkata, we are supplying our products go to all corners of the nation. A team of around 100 experienced agricultural and management experts are engaged in the whole process of the Andaman Plantations.

The most important plant found in the Andaman Plantations is Noni. A Noni fruit is considered to be a revolutionary fruit which helps in enhancing the human immune system, deliver superior antioxidants and increase energy and stamina in the human body. The Andaman Noni is indigenous to Andaman and Nicobar Islands and its volcanic soil and the climatic conditions in the island favour its growth here. We are the largest cultivators of Noni here with over 10,000 yielding Noni plants, all organically grown. Our tests have shown that the active ingredients- ProXeronine, Xeronine, Anthraquonine, Vitamin C and other active compounds responsible for health benefits are far higher in Andaman Noni. Ripe Noni fruits are naturally dried to get concentrated noni dried fruits after the loss of moisture. Made from the whole Noni fruit, this sun dried organic Noni dry powder is all natural and contains no additives. The medicinal quality remains identical to the natural Noni.

Benefits of Noni Fruits

Sunday, January 23, 2011

Noni fruits are Known as the ‘Queen of medicinal fruits’, consuming a Noni fruit either directly from the plantations or in its different forms has a host of benefits. Andaman Noni or Morinda Citrifolia, commonly known as great Morinda, Indian mulberry, beach mulberry, Tahitian Noni, cheese fruit is a tree in the family Rubiaceae. The noni fruit has high levels of Carbohydrates and dietary fibre. This provides 55% and 100% of the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI). This speaks for its place among the products promising weight loss. The Noni fruit and its accurate consumption can be a blessing for those who are frustrated with their extra fat in their body.

Dr. Ralph Henicke, a Hawaiian researcher found out that the Noni fruit contains a vital alkaloid called Xeronine. It is relatively a small alkaloid. But this tiny alkaloid is a very active constituent and plays a very important role in building and repair of cells in a human body. It works at the molecular level in building and repair of cells. The basic function of Xeronine is the regulation of rigidity and shape of specific proteins found in a human body. The reason why a noni juice made from the Noni fruit results in a number of physiological responses is due to the fact that the proteins are closely knit with the cells of a human body and often function within the cells themselves.

With Sodium and Potassium levels high in a Noni fruit, it helps in delivering superior antioxidants in the human body. Thus the fruit is said to have anti-ageing qualities. Also helps in improving cellular health, fight diseases like Cancer and other immune system ailments. Noni juice if taken on a regular basis, serves as a great energy booster for our body. Since the fruit has been in use in South-east Asia for the last 2000 years, many people regard a Noni fruit as a ‘survival fruit’, a fruit which helps in survival during famine. Andaman noni helps human cells receive essential nutrients for the better functioning of the human body.

Ancient people found the fruits and its leaves very useful in treating many diseases. People afflicted with painful gout were treated by rubbing the leaves of the Noni fruit. Its leaves were used to heal wounds. Doctors during that period used the Noni fruit for treating a lot of throat and mouth problems, menstrual problems of bleeding. They also used it as a laxative. Today, doctors are using Noni fruits and its products for treating many other diseases including blood pressure and blood sugar levels, arthritis, to boost energy, as a pain reliever and an anti-inflammatory drug.

Even places which are least spoken off have many tourist spots to enjoy. Andaman tourism in South-east Asia is the best option for travelling into some islands there. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have a plethora of tourist spots which remain still unexplored. Avisit to the islands can only speak of its beauty.

The reserved and protected forests of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands extend over 86% area of the territory and the forest cover is more than 92 %. 50 % of the forests are covered by Tribal Reserves, National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries, which are considered to be the epicentre of andaman and nicobar tourism. Luxuriant mangroves, perhaps the richest in the world, occupy nearly 5 % of the territory. More than 150 plant and animal species are found here. The Islands are considered to be a birds paradise - more than 271 varieties of birds inhabit the pictaresque landscape, out of which 39 are endemic. Megapode, Swiftlet, Hornbill and Nicobar Pigeon are some of the specialities of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Chatham Saw Mill is the first important attraction of the andaman tour. One of Asia's largest saw mills, Chatham Saw Mill was built here during the British rule. Expensive woods like Patak, Marble, Curzon and Satin wood are all cut into various sizes of planks, blocks and sleepers. They are dropped in chemical solutions and then sold. These are used for the islanders as well as the people of other states for their requirements. They must get permits to use these woods for houses, government offices and factories. Containers cater these huge logs of woods by ships to other states in India. Around 1000 employees work in this mill and is owned by the government. Andaman tourists can have a glance of the process in this mill.

The next attraction in the andaman tour is a museum undertaken by the forest department in Hadoo, which is a storehouse of all kinds of trees available in the islands. The trees and its kinds are exhibited by their names. Wooden handicrafts are displayed and also sold here. Hadoo also has a mini zoo where rare species of birds, crocodiles, monkeys, foxes, pythons, deer, wild goats, pigs, parrots and pigeons are found. Then there is a Naval Marine museum set up at Samudrika in Hadoo where Corals, Shells, Fish, and a lot of sea creatures are found. Navy's costumes, equipments and weapons are displayed vividly in the musuem. Few documentaries on the islands are also found here. The andaman tour then includes a Anthropological museum in Phoenix Bay where the weapons, pottery, hut models, wooden boats and the photographs of the native tribes are displayed. Various cultural heritages of the tribes of the island are displayed in this musuem. One of the most memorable places to visit during the andaman tour is the Cellular Jail located in Atlanta point which was constructed by the Britishers. The Jail stands as a symbol of cruelty and brutality the Britishers inflicted on the Indian freedom fighters.

Vanilla is one of the oldest and one of the most expensive spices as well as one of the most familiar

Thursday, January 6, 2011
Vanilla is one of the oldest and one of the most expensive spices as well as one of the most familiar, but you don’t hear a lot about it’s health benefits. That’s probably because it is more important for its flavouring and aromatic uses.

In modern times, aromatherapy tests were done on different aromas and the one that most men were aroused by was vanilla. There is some controversy over whether this arousal was gastronomic or sexual. Even so, andaman vanilla does have anti-oxidant properties. Yet there are less expensive and more effective means of getting antioxidants (fish oil, omega-3).
While not a lot of testing has been done on vanilla, vanila extract and vanilla bean regarding any specific health benefits, it is classed as a vanilloid along with capsaicin contained in Chile peppers and eugenol contained in cloves - both of which have numerous medicinal properties and health benefits. Some nutritionists have conjectured that vanilla might be a mild help in preventing cancer.
