Andaman and Nicobar Islands have come a long way from remaining just a tourist spot for the entire world. Agriculture is largely becoming another good source of revenue generation for the islands. No one had any idea about the latent potential that the islands had in the field of agriculture and that they can contribute in such a big way. Especially in the field of medicine and health.

No one had any idea that a mere shrub found in the islands would prove to be of such magical qualities. It was due to the hard work and dedication of the Andaman Plantation Development Corporation Limited and their whole team. They have successfully tapped the agricultural resources of the islands since their inception in 1955. Among all the other things, the discovery of Noni and its products has revolutionized the whole medical paradigm of the world. Noni fruits need specific climate for their growth and the islands provide the exact climate for the growth of the Andaman noni in the islands. Noni fruits are the basic raw material for all the noni products that the APDC manufactures.

Today noni fruits are considered to be the best armoury to fight almost all kinds of diseases. A noni fruit is at its best when plucked off ripe from the plantations. The noni plant has a straight trunk, large elliptical leaves, white tubular flowers and ovoid yellow fruits of up to 12 cm in diameter. The ripe noni fruit has a not so pleasant taste and odour. Cleansing, anti-inflammatory activity, immune enhancement and tumour-inhibition are some of the biological activities that a noni fruit can deliver in the human body. It’s the therapeutic properties of the noni fruits that make them an important part of a healthy diet. Noni fruits have been reported to have a range of health benefits for colds, cancer, diabetes, asthma, hypertension, pain, skin infection, high blood pressure, mental depression, atherosclerosis and arthritis. A noni fruit also contains scopoletin which inhibits the growth of Escherichia coli, which is responsible for intestinal infections, and Heliobacter pylori, which causes ulcers. Damnacanthal, which is found in the noni roots, inhibits the tyrosine kinase and gives a noni fruit antitumor activity.

Noni dried fruit are prepared from the ripe noni fruits at 90 F and then powdered. Noni dried fruits may be ingested to aid many internal health conditions, and has been known to help in a large percentage of cases. Noni dry fruits can help the body build up its own immune system, preventing many ailments. A noni dry fruit also makes ideal first-aid kits for home, car, purse, pocket or pack, and needs no refrigeration. In the earlier days a noni fruit was also known as ‘starvation fruit’. This is because of the existence of a belief that during the time of famine, this particular fruit was consumed by many people who were victimized by the famine. It helped in controlling the hunger of the people and was often termed as the ‘starvation fruit’. Thus, noni had its footprints from the past also.
